<p>The 119th FS operates as the flying unit of the 177th FIG and has had the F-16A ADF assigned since July 1988. The unit was activated in January 1930 and called to active service in September 1940, until disbanded in May 1944. The 119th Fighter Squadron was organized under state control at Newark in January 1947 with P-47Ds. The unit was not mobilized during the Korean War and flew P-51Hs and later P-51Ds from its home base. Redesignated 119th FIS, the squadron converted to F-86Es in May 1955. The unit changed to F-84Fs in 1958 and moved to Atlantic City IAP, becoming a Tactical Fighter Squadron in 1960. The 119th served on active duty between October 1961 and August 1962, before converting to F-86Hs later that year. The 177th FIG formed in October 1962, and F-100Cs were assigned in mid-1963. The unit saw an additional period of active service between January 1968 and June 1969 following the Pueblo crisis. The squadron re-equipped with the F-105B from June 1970 until January 1973, when F-106As were assigned and the 177th became a Fighter-Interceptor Squadron for the second time. The unit won the final F-106A category at the 1984 William Tell competition.
